Standardizing DFM Sign-Off for Automated Fiber Placement

How are you handling DFM sign-off for AFP today?

Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for Automated Fiber Placement is still done on the machine. Program a path, run a first article, read a thermal camera, adjust, repeat. But the bond is made once, in a process window only tens of degrees wide, and whether each pass lands inside it is set by geometry nobody checked first.

To standardize DFM for AFP, we need:

  • One shared input: the robot programme itself
  • Per-course (path) temperature compared against the process window
  • Defects and thermal results in one verdict
  • A portable report, produced in minutes

Thanks to Fedor Antonov (Layway), Pravin Luthada (Addcomposites) and Kilian S. (Fraunhofer IGCV).
